Among the forms of modern magic practiced more and more "faithful" to the ancient heritage that is wiccan. Wicca, a religion that is as mystical philosophy was and still is, unfortunately, the subject of serious misunderstandings on the part of Christians and non. For this I must, in my small way, explain the merits and also those who, in my opinion, are the defects, clarify thinking.
I have already mentioned in other posts on the existence of a wicca "eclectic", considered the original and the current derived from common foundations, and various sects, which are detached from the principal source for a variety of traditions. I personally disapprove of the seven closed and the knowledge they held, but not sufficient to describe all love her a whole month. There is the Alexandrian tradition of Wicca, the wiccatrù, Elijanesimo the Gardnerianesimo, Wicca of Diana, cristowicca. These are the current best known, in particular Wicca Diana and Gardnerianesimo are the most influential and eclectic Wicca together with one of the few to be organized in churches. In fact, contrary to what some would have you believe anti-modern Christians, Wicca is not necessarily synonymous with sect. Wicca is not even classified as a neo-pagan religion, although religion is a cult-like nature of Neolithic peoples and the spiritual and mystical doctrines of the East which also led to the formation of Jewish monotheism. This movement is, therefore, as the union of religion and spiritual-mystical philosophy, but it is not at all clear the genesis of his doctrine. Even the same Gardner, in my opinion, went a bit 'too far in the interpretation of ancient texts by putting the basics of wicca too much "of his flour sack."
least the basics, however, Gardner was right. The first religion "complex", that is not linked to applications of fetishism and superstition, was that the monotheistic Dryghten. This supreme entity, similar to the One Neoplatonic and Stoic logos, consists of two polar opposites, but complementary: a masculine principle, the God father, and a female, the Mother Goddess. This is neither easy nor dualism of pure monism. God and Goddess were designed as a single entity, two sides of same coin, inextricably linked. The emblem of this union is really the star as a symbol used by Jews, of which I spoke in the post on magic symbols. It is also monistic and pantheistic monotheism, but still of monotheism. The similarity between the divine creator of the various peoples Indo-European is the confirmation, as I have already amply demonstrated in the post on the origin of monotheism.
At some point, the dynamics are not entirely clear, it creates a division between God and Goddess. The solar and lunar cults are the first examples of this division, although still in its infancy and relegated to the symbolic sphere. Even today, the Wiccan use the moon as a symbol of the Goddess, knowing that the moon "material" is not the same goddess. A further division is when the Goddess becomes lace, or identified in three distinct embodiments, those of a young woman and crone. However, this change is not too significant, because the devotees of the Mother Goddess are still not aware that is only one Goddess. But from now on, the goddess begins to take a leading role in relation to God, to supplant it entirely in some cultures. For some scholars this has been interpreted as an effect of the birth of the first matriarchal community, associated with the prosperity of agriculture that is supposed to have been discovered by women. Indeed, the Mother Goddess is the Earth Mother, mistress of fertility and abundance. This is how the various goddesses, many people have broken away from the original strain, all resemble each other. And God? In societies protoceltiche is relegated to the role of Lover of the Goddess, a mere outline figure, and for the people of Asia remains in the shadow of various mother goddesses such as Ishtar and Astarte. But not all people like that.
A good example are the Semites, in their broadest sense, not just the Jews worship the one God, but also the Canaanites and Mesopotamians. For the Semitic race the idea of the God and Goddess joined survived for a long time, just giving rise to the first monotheistic. Only by passing the Neolithic society becomes closed against women, and the Goddess Mother loses its importance. In some cases, above the rigid Jewish monotheism, the idea of a Mother Goddess is associated with the worship of foreign gods identified with evil demons. However, the mystical communication between the various religions of the Middle East retains strong traces of the religion. As the Bible condemns the worship of Ascea, the book of Proverbs reminds us the figure of the divine female principle embodied by Wisdom. That is not a simple embodiment for literary cabal is confirmed by the first and mystic Hildegard of Bingen onwards. Wisdom in Hebrew Shekinah, is the Mother Goddess, the feminine principle of divinity, the divine immanence that remains throughout the area. Even the most rigid monotheistic
preserve the foundations of the primordial religion. Which does not, as unfortunately happened in part by Gardner and then with some seven wiccan, the separation between God and the Goddess, but their complementarity.
The schism has been aggravated by syncretism the late imperial period, where the Mother Goddess has come to lose its original essence, and then with the advent of Christianity. The identification with the Goddess Diana and other goddesses like it is not random, but is a reaction to Catholic repression of all forms of paganism and especially to his monstrous misogyny. This has also led to the development of Stregheria of gnostic matrix but also syncretic in that Aradia is the daughter of Diana personification of wisdom and Lucifer kicked out of the evil creator God for having rebelled. Witchcraft and Wicca Diana have much in common, and my theory is confirmed by the opinions of the latter certainly not good about Christianity. On
foundations of cults deriving from primordial religion called Wicca by Gardner, one can say that the magic in the Middle Ages was linked to the cult of the Goddess, but also to that of God, as shown by the formulas and prayers. The rest is superstition.
have an idea of the ideology of these cults is not easy. However, embody the principles identified by Gardner to instill the spirit of the ancient religion.
The Rede "Do what you want as long as you do not hurt anyone" respect the social laws in force in most of the Indo-European peoples, with particular reference to the three Druidic precepts. The rule of three, for which everything we do for good or evil we go back three times, again the sacredness of this issue, common to Christianity but also to other religions with the divine Trinity. From these two simple rules
illustrating the relationship of love and respect of the magician / witch against the surrounding world and the next. This refers directly to the link between macrocosm and microcosm and the concept of magic as a unique universe of which the parts are connected with each other and with his own soul. This is taught by all dotrrine mystical, especially by the cabal.
So the Wicca religion is based on primordial really supported by Gardner, but also by Robert Graves. The problem is that this religion has evolved into many forms and what it says Graves is not entirely correct. In the Middle Ages were aftermath of that knowledge, but there was a unified and consistent as is Wicca founded by him would be. For more about Wicca is a term coined by him, and even more obvious index of Crumbling medieval cults attached to the ancient religion. Already old at that time was no more, having been influenced by a wide variety of religions.
The only form of Wicca from a reliable foundation remains, in my opinion, the eclectic wicca. Halfway between mystical philosophy and religion, goes well with all other religions just because it is the most faithful to the primordial religion. In particular, the magic of Wicca is based on the maximum eclectic Western esoteric systems, from cabal the natural magic and alchemy, then, through the angelic theurgy Renaissance. In addition, being faithful in all respects to the moral law, does not admit black magic nor the worship of demons. A lie that has taken hold in recent years is that Wicca worships the devil because the image of the Horned God used by Wiccans. It is not so, because Wicca does not believe in the existence of evil as an entity to be opposed to good, and if a spirit comes to believe that on its own initiative decided to do evil, it is always in terms of freedom of choice and not a natural necessity.
The main symbols of the Wiccan pentacle is, for obvious references to the power of elements, the star of David, for his connection to the union between God and Goddess, and the triskelion, a symbol also used by Celtic Christianity, which reflects the conception of the cosmos based on the basic elements earth, air and water but also symbolizes the triple nature of the world: material, psychological and spiritual. For some Wiccan movements such as Wicca, Diana, the triple moon is the icon of the Goddess.
